Letter from our
Founder/Executive PRODUCER

Kathleen J. Bertrand

Dear friends and supporters of BronzeLens Film Festival:

We have made it to this new year of 2021 together! I sincerely hope you are continuing to stay safe and out of harm’s way, and that you are still practicing the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the CDC, and your local health agencies in maintaining safe protocols for you, your work crews, and those you care for. BronzeLens values the safety and health of all of you, as well as that of our team members!

Because the global pandemic of COVID-19 is still with us, the 12th Annual BronzeLens Film Festival will be a virtual event once again. BRONZELENS – The Virtual Experience, 2021 will take place on www.bronzelens.com over 6 days in August, beginning Tuesday, August 17, and concluding on Sunday, August 22nd. The virtual space was new for our festival, but I was encouraged by your overwhelming support for the films we screened in 2020. You watched our films and workshops in 46 different countries. Your interest allowed us to present the best in indie filmmaking created by people of color around the world, while also remaining safe from the ongoing and unpredictable effects of the virus.

BRONZELENS – The Virtual Experience, 2021 will return in August with many of the same elements, plus a few surprises, that you love about BronzeLens, and you can enjoy them all from the comfort of your home:

  • 6 days of the absolute best of the best of indie films, from short films to features, documentaries, web series, and music videos
  • The return of the Women SuperStar Awards
  • Exclusive features for official selection filmmakers
  • Virtual networking
  • Post-screening talkbacks with our filmmakers
  • Exciting, information packed conversations, panels, and workshops
  • Sunday Brunch with the Brothers
  • 12th Annual Cinema and Social Justice Sunday screenings
  • The prestigious BronzeLens Awards

We are grateful for the film submissions we have received from all over the world, and we’re looking forward to sharing your creations with a world-wide audience. BronzeLens remains committed to using its voice and platform to tell our stories which inspire, enlighten, and bring truth to power. The ability to tell our story is vitally important – now more than ever. No matter whether the medium is a social media platform, a film festival screening, or a movie theater – our lives, our stories have value and power.

One other note: recognizing the financial challenges of filmmaking in these times, BronzeLens has kept “Early Bird” submission fees in place through March 31, 2021.

We look forward to applauding the great creativity and talent that 2021 will bring.

BronzeLens Through the Years

History

The BronzeLens Film Festival (BLFF) began as a suggestion by the President of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB), William Pate. He believed that with the growing number of films being made in Atlanta and Georgia, a destination festival focused on films made by African Americans would have an audience. Kathleen Bertrand, Sr. VP at ACVB at the time, was charged with doing a feasibility study. After meeting with other existing festivals geared to African Americans, she concluded that there could be a niche for a new festival and began the process of launching what was to become BronzeLens. ACVB incubated BLFF for its launch in 2010 and its next 5 festivals.
